Trances lead to various temporary mental changes:
- Narrowing of perception and attention
- either negative (fading out of real things) or positive hallucinations (imagining unreal things)
- Significantly reduced or increased memory capacity
- Altered perception of time (dilation or standstill)
- special feeling of control
- special emotionality
and physical changes:
- altered muscle tone (either rigidity or hyperactivity)
- involuntary movements (e.g. Carpenter effect)
- Lack of pain and sensation
There is no universal definition of trance. The above explanation of the term forms the lowest common denominator of various definitions.
